THIMUN visit to The Hague
|
In January 2008, a delegation of 22 students from our school participated in the prestigious 40th annual THIMUN (The Hague Model United Nations) conference held at The Hague, Netherlands. The special 40th anniversary session focused on the very pertinent theme of climate change, which was explored through simulations of the various commissions and sub-commissions of the United Nations.
The conference commenced with an unforgettable and grand opening ceremony, which included a taped message from former American President Bill Clinton as well as a letter from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, emphasizing THIMUN’s esteem and global repute. The 5 day conference not only gave us insight into myriad cultures and contrasting viewpoints, but also instilled a spirit of debate and resolution within us. The topics were discussed, debated and resolved with an astounding vivacity and enthusiasm by competent delegates ranging from all across the world. Our students proved their competence through excellent debate and the passing of comprehensive resolutions submitted in the various commissions. Two of our students were also part of the extremely prestigious student officer panel, showing their outstanding caliber in the moderation of the conference sessions at THIMUN.
What essentially sets THIMUN apart besides its excellent quality of debate is the spirit of resolving of pressing world issues as well as the fact that it provides a platform for the global community to overcome the boundaries of culture and perspective and reach a consensus.
The electrifying atmosphere, stimulating arguments, and the synergy experienced have made THIMUN a truly memorable experience for each and every one of us. We are truly thankful for this opportunity to experience globalization first hand and to contribute to resolving global issues in an attempt to establish equality, freedom and sustainable development in our world in the days to come.
