Dhirubhai Ambani International School celebrated 'The Inaugural International Sports & Cultural Fest 2006' in the school's campus on 10th & 11th November 2006 on a grand scale and in glittering fashion, with participation of students from Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In keeping with the ethos of the school, the theme of the event was 'The Eternal Flame of Peace & Friendship'.

This sporting and cultural extravaganza presented a wonderful opportunity for nearly 1000 students from Dhirubhai Ambani International School and about 110 students from five international schools -Scholastica, Dhaka, Bangladesh; Harbor View School, Tianjin, China; Budhanilkantha School, Kathmandu, Nepal; Gateway College, Colombo, Sri Lanka and Saint John Mary International School, Saraburi, Thailand to compete in a variety of sporting events, showcase their cultural distinctiveness and share their learning interests.

The international delegates arrived in Mumbai from November 1 and during the one-week run-up to the main event they, accompanied by our students, went on sightseeing tours and visits to important places in Mumbai. They also took part in football, basketball, table tennis, badminton and taekwondo tournaments. The programs on November 10 and 11 included track events for students, parents' races, cultural displays by the international delegates, and a cultural presentation of the story 'The Eternal Flame' by students of Dhirubhai Ambani International School.

All the individual and team events saw fierce competition and earnest participation. The following are the highlights of the results:

  • Dhirubhai Ambani International School received the 'Best Overall Squad' award.

  • In the Athletics category, Gateway College, Sri Lanka received the 'Award for the Best Athletic Squad' and Dhirubhai Ambani International School was the runner-up.

  • In Basketball (Boys & Girls), Saint John Mary International School, Thailand was the winner and Budhanilkantha, Nepal the runner-up.

  • In Football (Boys), Dhirubhai Ambani International School was the winner and Budhanilkantha, Nepal the runner-up.

  • In Football (Girls), Dhirubhai Ambani International School was the winner and Buddhanilkantha, Nepal the runner-up.

  • In Table Tennis (Boys & Girls), Dhirubhai Ambani International School was the winner and Scholastica, Bangladesh the runner-up.

  • In Badminton (Boys & Girls), Saint John Mary International School, Thailand was the winner and Dhirubhai Ambani International School the runner-up.

  • In Taekwondo (Boys & Girls), Dhirubhai Ambani International School was the winner and Saint John Mary International School, Thailand the runner-up.

  • The Best Individual Cultural Performance Award for foreign delegates was shared by Vinidu Charya Subasinghe of Gateway College, Sri Lanka and Huo Yu Jia of Harbor View School, China.

  • Scholastica, Bangladesh received the award for the 'Best Cultural Performance Squad'.

On this occasion, the school honored the following veteran sportspersons:

Shri. S.S. Narayan He was the goalkeeper of the Indian football team that secured the fourth place in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, as well as a member of the national team in the Rome Olympics in 1960.
Shri Ramakant Achrekar He has been one of India's most successful Indian cricket coaches, under whose tutelage several iconic cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, developed.
Dr M.H.S Barodawalla A centurion, he is regarded as the 'Father of Martial Arts in India' and he received a third degree black belt in 1935.
Shri Leo Pinto He was the goalkeeper of India's National Hockey Team that won the gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London.

The school's sporting heroes and outstanding academic achievers were also felicitated on this occasion. Shri. Sachin Tendulkar, the legendary cricketer, honored the event on 10th November as the Chief Guest and Smt. Asha Bhosle, the versatile and vibrant singer, graced the event on 11th November as the Chief Guest. The Chief Guests and other Luminaries gave away the prizes to the winners. The two performances were attended by over 3000 parents and guests making the Fest a grand success.

"…It is important to remember that the real winner is the one who tries honestly to the best of his or her ability. The real winner is one who can take a defeat with a smile on his or her face. And come back with a greater resolve. Sports is all about that."
