DAIS- SCIENCE FAIR

"Private and confidential" were the only words uttered by our science teachers when questioned about the winners of the First Annual Science Fair of the Dhirubhai Ambani International School. Secret smiles spread across their faces as they added, as an afterthought, "Wait until Friday!" but it was the wait we could not stand!

The science fair was initially supposed to be held on the 30th of July 2005. However, due to the deluge in Mumbai, it was postponed to a week later. Classes 8, 9 and 10B participated in the science fair and the participants were free to choose their topic of investigation. Three days prior to the science fair, the projects were assembled class wise in the three science laboratories and were judged by at least 2 science and mathematics teachers. From each class, the best projects were selected, and these projects would be displayed in the science fair.

Finally, the day of the science fair dawned - Saturday 6th August 2005. Every participant was bubbling with excitement, and the projects were carefully arranged in the auditorium. Participants arrived early and scuttled about adding finishing touches to their projects before parents arrived. The fair began at 9:00 am, and parents of classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 were invited to view these projects.

Six different science or mathematics teachers judged the projects using the following criteria: originality, scientific thought, thoroughness and clarity. The top three projects from each standard would be chosen and announced a week later during assembly. The auditorium was abuzz with parents questioning the participants, and the judges busy scribbling their notes along with participants describing their investigations. The participants were not only hungry for praise - they were seen sneakily digging into delicious samosas in the auditorium, despite constant reminders from the teachers to abstain from doing so. This hunger soon ebbed away as the science fair drew to an end at 1:30 pm. Participants were then spotted debating who would walk away with the accolades.

This debate did not conclude until the 12th August in the assembly. Once again, we heard that it doesn't matter if you win or lose - it's how you play the game! The winners of the science fair had managed to play the game successfully. The winners were:
