JAMNAGAR
– SCIENCE AT PLAY |
Touchdown.
A group of 88 students wave adieu to a visibly
relieved Indian Airlines crew. The suitcases
are heaved into Volvos and the preciously-guarded
sunscreen bottles emerge. It’s 21st
April, 2.30 pm the DAIS students have just
landed in Jamnagar.
Clinging to the coast of Gujarat, Jamnagar
is a haven for techies and naturalists alike.
The foundation of this city leans heavily
on a pillar of science. Physics, Chemistry
and Biology come alive when one pulls open
the curtains. Consequently, Jamnagar forms
the ideal destination for the Group 4 Project,
which involves all IB Science students.
The Reliance sphere, including the Reliance
refinery, township and the Green Belt, is
a feast for the eyes. Boasting of petroleum
industries that are 100% self-sufficient,
the Reliance refinery was the cynosure of
all eyes and minds that worshipped physics.
The renowned Green Belt is like a gigantic
pop-up biology book. Though fauna are far
and few, each new curve of the road leads
to endless acres of tranquility; 200,000 trees
soothed our heat oppress’d brains.
And then there is the township itself. The
township is the brainchild of Mrs. Ambani
and this reflects in the way every brick spells
“Quality”. We were to spend our
next four days in personal appartments, replete
with terraces, food, kitchenettes, food, cable
TV, food and of course, unlimited food.
We also managed to finish a LOT of work. After
visits to the bordering villages, farms, hospitals
and schools, we compiled a 10 - minute presentation
that encapsulated the theories being taught
in our classrooms. Call it science at work,
call it science at play, the trip challenged
the practicality of our ideas.
And at the heart of this flurried activity,
the highlight of the trip, the magnificent
DAIS vs. KDAV football match fermented a great
deal of school spirit. With winning penalties,
riveting presentations and fruitful group
work, the trip was a S-U-C-C-E-S-S.
