Young Explorers Fairs at the lower primary level, Interest Fairs at the upper primary level and Science Fairs at the secondary school level are held annually. The Interest Fairs and Young Explorers Fairs are based on the premise that not all kids love science but all kids love something! There are many advantages to these fairs, because in them there are many more options.
These fairs encourage students to delve deeply into concepts that arouse their curiosity. They provide participants an opportunity to investigate their favourite areas and share them with the school community. They can use topics like the history of Mumbai Island, how commercials are made, lasers, the hip, and more. Every Interest Fair and Young Explorers Fair is a learning experience for both the students and the teachers involved.
Science
Fairs give students an opportunity to individually
investigate a scientific problem. Students
complete individual or team projects in which
they are required to formulate a question,
research a topic, design an experiment, collect
and analyze data, and form a conclusion based
on their data. These projects help students
learn the scientific method by actually going
through the same process that scientists use.
Students also learn how to sequence data into
an attractive display and how to make a clear
and effective oral presentation of their work.
Judged on creative ability, scientific thought,
thoroughness and clarity, the top 20 projects
are entered for the state level Intel Science
Fair competitions. In the year 2004, two of
our entries went to the national level finals
and were adjudged among the 10 best in India.
In the year 2005, one of our students won
the National Championship and participated
in the international level competition held
in the USA.
The Intel India Science Fair 2006
received a total of 1240 project synopses
from across the country. Upon evaluation of
the synopses by its Scientific Review Committee,
projects that were innovative and met IRIS
criteria were short-listed and selected for
the National Fair. A total of 185 projects
were short-listed, of which two from Dhirubhai
Ambani International School eventually made
it to the final round of selection. One of
these projects won the 4th prize in the group
projects category in the Intel International
Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)
held in Alberque, New Mexico in May 2007.
In the Intel National Science Fair 2007, two
of our students have been declared winners
for their project on “Natural Convective
Solar Dryer”. They participated in the
Intel International Science and Engineering
Fair held in Atlanta in May 2008.
In 2008, 5 team projects from our school were shortlisted for the Intel National Science Fair held in Kolkata in December 2008, out of around 1000 synopses at an all-India level. They presented projects under the category of "Engineering" and "Chemistry" and two of our students who put up the Chemistry project won a prize for the best project in the selected category.
The school hosts a book fair every year in which leading publishers take part. Parents and students are invited to participate and make use of this excellent opportunity and buy a variety of useful publications. The book fair provides a unique platform for developing good reading habits and raising awareness about the importance of books in our daily lives as a store-house of knowledge. |
