How many of us feel pity for
dying people in malnutrition and hunger stricken areas of
Africa? How many of us are horrified at the sight of those
Iraqis from the Abu Ghraib prison whose human rights have
been grossly violated? How many of us are saddened by the
“vicious” brain-drain that will lead our highly skilled workers
to more affluent countries? And what about the continuous
threat of a third “nuclear” world war which might break out
at any moment due to a slight imbalance in world power and
cause its ultimate destruction? Ladies and Gentlemen, DAIMUN
is the platform where you can voice YOUR opinion while representing
a country and actually place yourselves in the shoes of the
diplomats who strive to secure their own countries’ interests,
while still safeguarding international peace and security.
On behalf of the entire staff of the Dhirubhai
Ambani International Model United Nations (DAIMUN) 2006, I
welcome you all to the third annual conference of DAIMUN to
be held between 14th and 16th September, 2006.
Since DAIMUN was established in 2004, it became one of the
most reputed Model United Nations Conferences in India, getting
delegates from various international schools throughout the
country. However, at the Dhirubhai Ambani International School,
we are taught to “Dare to Dream, and Learn to Excel.” With
this philosophy embedded in our minds, we aim to make DAIMUN
one of the foremost international conferences in the world.
During the three days of debate and lobbying, the delegates
will learn to hone their diplomatic skills and put themselves
in the shoes of some of the most influential leaders in the
world. Delegates will come in with resolutions written on
the different topics allotted to them and then through their
skills of “soft” diplomacy make other countries follow them
by building a powerful bloc. However, they cannot go against
their country’s international stand, even if they personally
are against it. (I hope you can empathize with me: I have
been a US delegate!) The experience I have gained through
the various Model United Nations Conferences I have been part
of, can be summed up by quoting Mr. David Williams, founder
of THIMUN, “whether its curricula or extra-curricula, MUN
is simply the best.”
On a concluding note, I would like to mention that our officer
team comprises of some of the most experienced delegates in
the world today, having attended HMUN, BEIMUN, THIMUN Singapore,
THIMUN (at the Hague) and various other affiliated conferences,
and I assure you that my team and I will put together all
our efforts to make this simulation of the UN as close to
reality as possible and help the delegates imbibe in our motto
"Confer. Challenge. Conquer. Reality is yours." If any of
you feel the need, please do not hesitate to contact me directly
at aditya.jhaveri@gmail.com.
Aditya Jhaveri,
Secretary-General,
